INTERNET SALES TAX PASSES SENATE – INCLUDES VOTE COUNT

The Senate approved the Marketplace Fairness Act S. 743 on Monday by a vote of 69-27 with 21 republicans voting in favor and 5 democrats voting against. Four Senators did not vote.

The measure will require online retailers in 45 states and DC, who total $1 million or more in sales per year in states in which they do not have a physical brick and mortar location, to begin charging sales tax.

The Bill will now move to Congress where republican lawmakers are divided, with some saying it will level the playing field for traditional storefront businesses while others maintain that it’s another Obama stamped tax increase which will undermine the U.S. economy – with academic studies estimating that if enacted the measure will bring more than $12 billion in additional sales taxes.
