“I spent most of last week in Washington, D.C. and it is GREAT! to be back in America,” was the opening remark from Texas Senator Ted Cruz at the South Carolina Tea Party Coalition Convention recently. Cruz spoke for approximately 40 minutes and delivered a speech which resonates with many Americans. The following are a few of the highlights from Cruz’s speech:
I very much agree with Ronald Reagan’s observation that Republicans win when we paint not in pale pastels but in bold colors.
If you compare 2004, the last race Republicans won nationally to 2008 and 2012 by far the biggest difference are the millions of conservatives who showed up in 04 who stayed home in 08 and 12. And if we nominate another candidate in the mold of a Bob Dole or a John McCain or a Mit Romney – all of whom are good, honorable, decent men – but if we nominate another candidate in that mold, the same people who stayed home in 08 and 12 will stay home in 2016 and the democrats will win again.
If you’re looking to Washington for courage(laughter) – it ain’t gonna happen.
We need to demand of every candidate who stands in front of us two things: number one, tell the truth and number two, do what you said you would do.
We need to abolish the IRS. We need to move to a simple flat tax that lets every American fill out his or her taxes on a postcard. We need to padlock that [IRS] building and put those 110,000 IRS agents on our southern border.
We need to audit the federal reserve.
We need to repeal every word of Obamacare.
Please leave your cellphones on. I wanna make sure President Obama hears every word tonight.
We need to defend the 10th Amendment, or as President Obama calls it ‘the what’? The fundamental protection that says the power is not given to the federal government but to the states and to the people.
There’s a host of areas where the fed has no business and that includes curriculums in our schools – and we need to repeal every word of common core. (standing O)
We need to stand with the nation of Israel. (standing O)
We have never seen an administration in this country so antagonistic of the nation of Israel as this administration. We remember some months ago when Israel was experiencing rocket attacks from HAMAS – when the Obama FAA banned commercial air flights into he nation of Israel. When that happened I went out and asked a simple question: did the Obama administration just launch an economic boycott on the nation of Israel? I pointed out that we don’t ban commercial air flights into Yemen, into Afghanistan, into Pakistan – we don’t even ban commercial air flight into much of the Ukraine and you’ll recall Ukraine just had a passenger airliner shot down by Russian separatists. So why then had this administration singled out Israel for disparate treatment when they have one of the safest airports in the world because one rocket had fallen harmlessly a mile away from the airport. And why did they do it at the exact same moment John Kerry was in the Middle East with $47 million for Gaza that will end up in the hands of HAMAS and we were trying to pressure Israel to stop taking out the rockets and the terrorists.
Afterwards Cruz took questions from the audience.
