We all saw the dastardly images; evil rocket launchers which were seized during a recent Sandy Hook induced LAPD Gun Buy Back program – being lauded around above the heads of every cop in Southern California.
LAPD Police Chief Charlie Beck was gravely tickled when he announced to a press conference of eager pro gun control journalists that “Those are weapons of war, weapons of death. These are not hunting guns. These are not target guns…they have no place in our great city.”
Well, yeah they do CHIEF, because the junk you’re parading around is available for sale at every two bit military surplus store in town! Those are AT-4 Single Use anti-tank grenade launchers. Once fired they are as harmless as a crazy straw and the disposable remains often times turn up in military enthusiast frequented establishments, much the same as deactivated grenades and other various shells and odds n ends do.
The real kicker is that one of the tubes the LAPD was parading around was just a training device which had never been loaded and could never be loaded because it’s sole intent was for display and practice purposes.
This is another classic example of “old media” – a term I’m coining here – being overly eager to jump on a story that parlays the current agenda of their President and his gun control cohorts in Washington. Or we have some really overpaid journalists reporting news which is completely unverified as to it’s validity.

The only M72-series LAW training device designed for individual use is a subcaliber
trainer (Figure B-1). This device, referred to as the M190 subcaliber launcher, is
made by adding an M190 subcaliber conversion kit (NSN 1340-00-420-7999)
(Figure B-2, page B-2) to an expended M72-series LAW launcher. It is used to fire
the M73 subcaliber (35-mm) rocket. This 36-mm rocket is shorter and lighter than
the LAW’s 66-mm tactical rocket. It simulates the tactical rocket’s smoke and flight
trajectory but with less noise and backblast. The expended launcher is likely to wear
out before the subcaliber inner tube does. When this happens, the inner tube can be
transferred to another expended launcher.
The AT4 requires little training and is quite simple to use, making it suitable for general issue. However, as the cost of each launcher makes regular live-fire training very expensive, practice versions exist which are identical in operation but fire reloadable 9mm or 20mm tracer ammunition

Good job guys, whew do I feel safe now. Thank God there’s police out there like Sheriff Clarke in WI who want people to be able to defend themselves. Not these clowns that actually thought crooks would turn in a real grenade launcher for a measly $100 gift card. Though you do have to tip your hat to the ingenuity of the people that spent a few bucks at a military surplus store and got a $100 in return. Not a bad little ROI.

Cops are supposed to be truthful, and once they are found to be liars, they are no longer considered “reputable witnesses”. Does that mean the chief has forfeited his badge? Oh, wait, that’s California, where pot-smokers carry badges ….. now, if it were Texas ….
ACTUALLY, it’s even lamer than that. The black-and-gold band on the tube indicates that it was ALWAYS an inert training mockup. It was never alive AT-4, and could never be made to be so. The tube is much thinner than the standard live AT-4, and does not have a proper firing mechanism.
That Chief is a a real winner.
Do you relize that the AT-4 Trainer fires a 9mm pistol round? The trainer can actually be fired over and over and over again, although only one round at a time.

Practice AT4s do not fire jack. except for the dead weight inside, they’re empty.
This isn’t the same At-4s. Did you go through Army basic training and flunk out? Is that why you’re posting incorrect info?
The ones that shoot the 9mm tracers don’t have a color coding band.
Oh, and they’d be a pretty goofy weapon to use on someone, you have to uncap the back and then aim a giant tube at someone to shoot a single round. lol
