Veterans Show up in force at FLA Democratic HeadQuarters to contest Obama Flag
Two months ago they began flying the flag that has the stars replaced with the likeness of Barak Obama, but after receiving thousands of angry emails, phone calls and even a couple of death threats this week, they’ve decided to lower the offensive display.
On Tuesday, approximately 20 Veterans who had been attempting to call the office for weeks finally showed up knocking on the door of the democratic headquarters ready to explain the flag code to the occupants. As quoted on live leaks Korean War Veteran Don Van Beck had this to say:
“It was extremely disturbing. You have to be a veteran to understand how we feel about the flag. You
go to war defending that flag and now they’re defacing it.”
The group quickly pointed out that the U.S. Flag Code states:
“The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure design, picture, or drawing of any nature.”
The Democratic Club Chair Nancy Hurlbert initially refused to remove the flag stating that it was private property. Moments later, however, after re-entering the HQ building and obviously researching the code for herself, she quickly re-emerged and removed the flag stating that it had been a gift from a member.
Threats of Violence
The club secretary Janet Manchon states that the hostilities toward Hurlbert, who has been silenced by the florida democratic party, have escalated into threatening phone calls and even death threats.
“It was just vitriol. I’ve been called every name in the book,” says Manchon. “The flag means a lot to us. My father was a veteran. My husband’s a veteran. We feel badly because we support our veterans.”
Democratic Club members believe this incident isn’t about the flag, but rather a way to be critical of President Obama. Van Beck, the Korean Vet says that’s just not true:
“I would have acted the same at another location this is not a political thing. This is about the flag. If we saw Mitt Romney on a flag at the Republican Headquarters, we would have done the same thing.”
FLA Dem Party Admits Wrong Doing
The Florida Democratic Party has taken a distant stance from the ordeal by stating “We don’t condone the actions of the Lake County Club and are in agreement that the flag should have been taken down” but a subsequent follow up email from the FDP to Hulbert encouraged the Club members “not to let the incident distract you from your work.”
The flag was selling online for $130 late last week and Van Beck noticed in amazement that the items are manufactured …. in china.
